Poem: Heartbreak

Updated: Dec 22, 2020

When heartbreak comes to you as a spectral snake

You know you can’t deny it.

You always know when she’s coming.

Her faint hissing outside your door

As you cry into your folded arms

Desperately begging her to go away.

But every time she visits

She always convinces you to let her in

With promises of peace.

When heartbreak comes to you as a spectral snake

You must play the Sad Songs playlist from your phone quietly behind you

And you must not turn on the light.

For the light signifies moving on

And she knows you’re not ready yet.

Your glassy eyes are not allowed to rest as she witnesses the waterfalls on your cheeks

And attempts to hug them away

But her serpentine body wraps around your chest.

She squeezes tighter to try and stop the tears

But all she does is make it harder to breathe.

You cannot prevent her entrance when she visits

She always makes it clear that her job is to help you

And no matter how much her tactics hurt

You know you have to let her work

When heartbreak comes to you as a spectral snake

You have to prepare for her

She will test you

She may even break you

But keep in mind

She will save you.
